In fact, a few years ago Amazon had to stop a hiring tool that gave lower ranking for womens’ resume, because the tool which was practiced then followed the previous data whereas which made more males to be hired in compared to females being hired (ibm.com).

It is not something an unfairness of The AI it followed human biases in the data.

AI Bias can be found at many areas such as facial recognition tools, which has shown higher amount of error rate for people with color, also the loan approval models have unfairly denied minority applicants.

The harm in this is that AI with its Bias can creep into AI in many areas.

As philosopher Michael Sandel warns,

“algorithms…replicate and embed the biases that already exist in our society”

As I have stated at the begining of this article, in November 2021, UNESCO’s 193 member states unanimously adopted the Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, which is the world’s first global standard on AI ethics.

This document defines common values and principles to guide AI development for the benefit of humanity​.

Its cornerstone is the protection of human rights and dignity, emphasizing fundamental principles like transparency, fairness, and human oversight of AI​ (unesco.org).

The UNESCO Recommendation is very comprehensive it outlines 10 principles that cover areas such as human rights, environmental well-being, diversity and non-discrimination, transparency, accountability, privacy, and more​ (news.sap.com).

It even explicitly bans certain harmful uses of AI, like social scoring of individuals or mass surveillance, calling them invasive and unacceptable.

This global policy acts as a framework for countries to build their own laws and practices.

Government Guidelines and Regulations

Around the world, governments are introducing AI ethics guidelines.

In the United States, the White House released a “Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights” in 2022 by the Biden Administration, outlining five principles,

However, initiatives like the OECD AI Principles (adopted by 50+ nations) aim to harmonize efforts.

Corporate AI Ethics Policies

It’s not just governments many Fortune 500 companies have created their own AI ethics guidelines.

They recognize that building customer trust and avoiding harm is important l for business, too.

For example, SAP, a global tech company, updated its SAP Global AI Ethics Policy in 2024 to align with the UNESCO principles​ (news.sap.com).

SAP’s policy includes 10 guiding principles such as, Fairness and Non-Discrimination, Safety and Security, Privacy and Data Protection, Transparency and Explainability and Accountability.

Other huge tech companies like Google, Microsoft, IBM have also published AI ethics principles and set up internal ethics boards to enforce them.

Transparency in AI means being open and honest about how AI systems work and how decisions are made.

AI should not be a mysterious “black box” that spits out decisions  which no one can understand. Instead, developers should work to make AI explainable and traceable.

This can involve technical measures (like designing algorithms that can provide reasons for their outputs) and simple communication (like informing users when they’re interacting with an AI and what it’s doing).

Imagine you applied for a loan and an algorithm decides your fate. Transparency would mean the lender can explain the main factors the AI considered, rather than saying “Computer says no” with no further info.

It also means if an AI makes a mistake, we can trace back through its logic or data to find out why.

Transparency builds trust because people and regulators can inspect and understand AI behavior.
