Five Unintentional things you do when depressed

Depression has become one of the most common disorders among the younger generation in the modern world. Fast phasing and ever-dynamic environment which is quite different than what our ancestors experienced back then, has increased the tendency of getting depressed easily nowadays.

What is Depression?

According to American Psychiatric Association (APA), Depression (Major Depressive Disorder) is a common and serious medical illness which negatively affects how you feel, how you think and how you act.

Below are some symptoms of Depression

  • Feeling sad or having a depressed mood
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed
  • Change in appetite (unrelated to dieting)
  • Irregular sleeping patterns
  • Loss of energy
  • Feeling worthless or guilty

Things you do unintentionally when depressed

There are several behaviors or habits we tend to exhibit or adopt when we are depressed. It is not a purposeful display of act rather an unintentional trait adopted. Here are five things we tend to do unintentionally, when we are depressed.

01)  The need of constantly socializing

When depressed, some people have this urge to socialize or be with people all the time. Socializing is needed for every one of us as humans are social creatures and even socializing in moderation is one of key ways of reducing depression. But in this case, depressed person wants to hang out with others in order to mask themselves and not confront of their own emotions. They use socializing as an escape from their feelings.

02) Self Isolation

Not to be confused with the quarantine related term we use in nowadays in order to prevent from Covid-19, the self isolation related to depression is the most common trait of many people suffering from depression. They tend to avoid socializing at all cost and withdraw themselves from the society. The disadvantage of social withdrawing is by doing so; they tend to lose the chance of getting much needed help from the people who care for them.

03) Express inappropriate emotions

The subset of Depression called Alexythemia, which makes ones feelings are unbalanced with the world around them causes expressing inappropriate emotions. Some express more muted emotions when their emotions should have been heavier or wise versa. These traits usually display in social situations.

04)  Odd sleeping schedule

This can be either sleeping more or not sleeping at all. Some depressed people tend to sleep more than they would typically do and some tend to develop insomnia due to lack of sleep.

05) Change the appetite

When facing depression, some people tend to eat more (binge eating) and some tend to eat way less. In order to cope with the huge amount of mental stress they face, some tend to eat junk food, sweets or salty food while others are losing the interest in food at all.

As per APA, Depression affects an estimated one in 15 adults (6.7%) in any given year. And one in six people (16.6%) will experience depression at some time in their life. Every one of us is likely getting into depression at least once in a lifetime so it is of utmost importance to keep a track of our emotions and how we feel all the time. It’s better to consciously monitor our behavioural patterns and changes to it as previously mentioned traits and habits are more likely to display naturally when one is depressed. It is recommended to keep a track of your lifestyle in order to reduce the vicious consequences of depression.
